BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The idea of doing social networking activities using various online resources is not a novel one in the modern day. The development of a large number of online communities and organizations was one of the outcomes of the process that resulted in the establishment of the World Wide Web. These online communities are regarded as the progenitor of the social networking websites that have been built over the course of the previous ten years. The phrase "social media" refers to "a range of Internet-based apps or 'interactive platforms' which enables for the creation and sharing of the content that is created by the users." These young networking sites are expanding at an alarming rate, and their complexity is steadily diminishing, which is leading to the development of apps that are more user-friendly for individuals of all ages (Maya, 2015). One of the most important and significant methods for generating a wide variety of information is social media. It encompasses the online technology that enables people to share resources and connect with one another in an uncomplicated manner over the internet. Literature has highlighted a variety of philosophies of learning in relation to social networks, some of which include motivation through social connections, teaching by collaboration, and improvement in learning through immediate and frequent feedback and engagement. The "social constructivism theory," which states that interaction and socialization can help students learn and construct their knowledge and personal learning processes, provides an explanation for the use of social media for educational activities. This theory is based on the description that interaction and socialization can help students learn and construct their knowledge. The use of social media as a set of constructivist tools for teaching and learning makes possible the participatory learning that is so important nowadays (Livingstone 2018). Due to the abundance of resources, chances, and opportunities for cooperation, teaching in the 21st century is often regarded as an extremely exciting occupation. The use of social media is both cost-effective and optimal in terms of the tools available for global collaboration. It is believed that close to 80 percent of young individuals have an account on at least one social networking site. [Citation needed] Numerous young people regard it as an important component of their lives at this point in their development. It has brought to light the abilities of today's younger generation and makes available, with a single click, the possibilities that are most pertinent to them. Students are able to discuss challenges and concerns and receive a variety of solutions and suggestions from their professors and classmates who are online.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Although there are many advantages to be gained from technology, there is also the possibility that it might do damage in the wrong hands. It is an attempt by students to engage in activities that are enjoyable or intriguing to them and their friends while dodging the monitoring of their parents. According to Livingstone (2018), young people enthusiastically embrace the online realm because it represents their space, is visible to their peer group rather than adult surveillance, and provides an exciting yet relatively safe opportunity to engage in the social psychological task of adolescence – to construct, experiment with, and present a reflexive project of the self in a social context – as well as for flouting communicative norms and engaging in other risk-taking behaviors.

According to Obi, Bulus, Adamu, and Sala'at (2015), the addiction that students have to social networks, the frequency with which they are exposed to social networks, the social media networks to which students are more exposed, and the influence of social media as a medium of interaction between students are all topics that have been discussed in recent years and have had an effect on the academic performance of students. Because there is no way to do well academically without reading, many young people waste their time on social media by chatting and making new friends rather than reading their books. This can have a negative impact on their academic performance because there is no way to do well academically without reading. It is not unusual to see a student conversing in settings that are seen to be very sensitive or structured, such as a place of worship, a mosque, or a classroom environment. Some people become so caught up in the moment that they keep talking even as they make their way down the steep hill (Maya, 2015).
